Karaga District is one of the tweenty six (26) districts in the Northern Region The District is located in the North-Eastern Northern Region, roughly between latitudes 9°30’ and 10°30’ North and longitudes 0° and 45’West. Karaga is the administrative capital. It shares boundaries with four districts in the Northern Region, West Mamprusi District and East Mamprusi District to the North, Savelugu/Nanton Municipal to the West and Gushiegu (the mother district) to the east. Karaga the district capital is 24km from Gushegu and 94km from Tamale, the Regional Capital.

Karaga District having been carved out of the then Gushiegu/Karaga District and officially inaugurated in August, 2004.
The assembly has given prominence to infrastructure development which has been identified as an important factor for a successful and sound take-of of the assembly.
The construction of an ultra-modern office block, Assembly Hall complex and a staff accommodation, for both senior and junior officers. These are some of the visible landmarks of Karaga, the district capital.
KARAGA: Forced marriages impede education The Integrated Social Development Centre (ISODEC), a human rights and a social development non-governmental organization has expressed grave concern about the alarming rate of forced marriages in the Karaga District, a situation which impedes the education of the girl-child.
