The District is located in the North-Eastern Northern Region, roughly between latitudes 9°30’ and 10°30’ North and longitudes 0° and 45’West. Karaga is the administrative capital.
It shares boundaries with four districts in the northern region, West and East Mamprusi to the North, Savelugu/Nanton to the West and Gushegu (the mother district) to the South and east Karaga the district capital is 24km from Gushegu and 94km from Tamale, the Regional Capital.

Karaga District having been carved out of the then Gushiegu/Karaga District and officially inaugurated in August, 2004.
The assembly has given prominence to infrastructure development which has been identified as an important factor for a successful and sound take-of of the assembly.
The construction of an ultra-modern office block, Assembly Hall complex and a staff accommodation, for both senior and junior officers. These are some of the visible landmarks of Karaga, the district capital.
KARAGA : NGO support four districts to improve education A consortium of four Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO) operating in the Northern parts of Ghana, are supporting four districts with a 150,000 dollar scheme to improve the standard of education towards transforming their societies.
KARAGA : NR Cotton Growers angry with Gov’t Members of the Northern Region Cotton Growers Association have kicked against government’s concluded agreement to re-zone some cotton growing communities in the northern region and add them to the Upper East Region as part of the contractual relationship with Wienco Company Limited that has taken over cotton production in the North-Eastern zone.
KARAGA : President Mills owns no farm The Karaga District Chief Executive has denied the Presidents’ knowledge of a twelve acre land acquired by the Assembly for agriculture production in the District.
